I vividly remember being asked 16 years ago (by my now husband!) what my dream job would be. At the time I jokingly replied, “a yoga teacher!” - never actually believing it could really happen. In 2018, at a studio by a beautiful beach in California, I made my dream reality.
My yoga journey started in my early twenties. Working as an intensive care nurse in London, and being active on my feet all day for 12 hour shifts, I was no stranger to back pain! A friend had seen a studio advertising hot yoga and asked me to join her. My first thought was “why does it have to be so hot in here?” However, by the end of the class it was already clear how the heat was helping me loosen up: assisting me to safely stretch deeper and become stronger through different poses. I could feel a detoxifying process. I felt happier and healthier.
After moving to Leeds, I was thrilled to discover that Vicki had opened a hot yoga studio right in the city centre – where I have practiced almost daily since the studio opened. I have become stronger, fitter and more flexible. It has greatly helped my life outside of the studio too; I sleep better and find I have more focus, self-discipline and patience with myself. My back feels so much stronger. It has given me a love of stillness and meditation which I get to share with my students in the studio in Savasana.
I am very grateful to be walking this path. In the same way as it has been so rewarding as a nurse to care for patients over the years and help them with their recovery, it is now a true joy to support yoga students with their practise and see the benefits of yoga come in to in their lives too - body and mind.
